Andrew Sullivan, a writer and blogger at The Atlantic, has been posting readers’ experiences throughout the Recession and has recently started posting updates on some. Today he ran an update from someone who has recently come to discover gardening. “What a rush and how fulfilling. Who knew?!” he writes.

Do you think it's from the Recession? Gardening's expensive! I think it's a need for learning the ways of our grandparents, food safety scares, and wanting to feel a connection to what we're eating. Maybe the folks new to this don't spend all their money on good dirt and heirloom seeds like I do!
ReplyDeleteIt's true, gardening can be expensive. Maybe the less you know about gardening, the more affordable it becomes. Sometimes, seeds for 10 cents a pack and basic garden soil can yield some pretty good results.

ReplyDeleteGardening is like any other hobby: as expensive as you (can) make it, IMO. When I was working and could afford it, I bought all my annuals in the spring as lush plants. Now I start them indoors from seed at a BIG cost/return savings...and I'll keep it up! (Even if I'm "prosperous" again :)
